Emergency Medical Technician - students are trained to provide basic life support measures such as patient assessment, treatment of shock, oxygen therapy, use of certain medications, bandaging and splinting and emergency childbirth. Students will practice basic skills in small groups.

Students must be at least 16 years of age by the first night of class.

Course graduates are eligible for college credit recommendation.

First Responder

First Responders are often the first trained person to arrive at the scene of an emergency. You will be expected to take appropriate action and provide care for injuries or sudden illness until more advanced medical personnel arrive. This course prepares you to fulfill this role as a First Responder. Students will practice basic skills in small groups.

This course should be taken by Police Officers, Firefighters, Rescuers, Office of Emergency Management Personnel, Recreation Coaches, Scout Leaders, Teachers, and any other persons who wish to be prepared.

EMT Integrated Refresher Programs

The EMT Integrated Refresher course in designed to review the skills, knowledge and critical thinking needed to provide optimum prehospital care.  This course includes 24 CEUs that will count as either core or elective credits based upon the continuing education the EMT or EMT-B has already completed.  This class includes the expanded scope of practice materials and meets the NREMT requirements of a "Transition" program.  This course may also be used by reciprocity candidates, individuals with expired NJ EMT certs, physicians, PA, RN or APN to obtain current NJ EMT certification.  There will be both skills and written evaluations starting with the very first session.  Students are strongly advised to read a new initial or transition text prior to the first session.

Note: EMT's with expired cards and doctors and nurses taking this course for the first time must take the New Jersey EMT written test.

NJ OEMS policy has recently changed. Anyone with an expired NJ EMT certification, REGARDLESS OF THE EXPIRATION DATE, may regain his or her EMT certification by having a valid professional rescuer CPR certification, successfully completing the Refresher Program AND scoring a 70% or greater on the NJ EMT Basic Certification Examination.

If you are a basic student who failed the test three times, you must take this course to have three more chances to pass the test.

NOTE: you must pass the test within one year from the last day of your BASIC class. The state DOH will check this one year requirement before they let you test.

No tuition fee for an EMT who is a member of a NJSFAC 20th District Ambulance Corps.  You must submit a separate signed NJSFAC 20th District Tuition Exemption Form for each course.   Bring a copy of your transcript to document you have less than 24 Elective CEU's.

 

EMT's who are not members of a NJSFAC 20th District Ambulance Corps must submit a check for the proper cost.  The New Jersey EMT Training Fund no longer covers Elective Continuing Education Courses.
